L’homme avec les yeux bleus
Jacques’ head was thumping as he watched his wife rush around the kitchen. She looked like a plate spinner you see on TV or in the flesh at a variety show.
She turned down the heat on the vegetables before pouring the tea and turning off the water steaming into the soapy washing up bowl. That was nothing new; Colette washing, Jacques’ head hurting.
He’d pretended the sun was too bright when he winced as they came out the cinema. The music had been too loud but the cinema was the only time she sat still, her luxury, her time, so he’d said nothing.
“Colette, please,” he said now, as she added sugar to his cup.
She stopped, turned round and looked at him sitting at the kitchen table. Her ‘homme avec les yeux bleus’ had lost some of his colour, the eyes no longer searing, his tan from long hours gardening a distant memory.
“S’il te plait,” he implored, and pulled out a chair.
