Where Matt came from

162 old ladies 102739“Been to see mum recently?”

“Yesterday. You?”

“Last week. How was she?”

“Oh, you know, the same.”

“Seemed a bit forgetful to me.”

“She’s allowed. She’s nearly 100.”

“Looked at me funny when I first arrived, like she couldn’t remember my name. Dad was an Edward so it’s not hard.”

“Maybe she’s got things on her mind.”

“Like what? She only watches TV all day. Doesn’t even have to do anything for herself.”

“She wasn’t watching TV when I went. Just got back from a yoga session.”

“Mum? Yoga?”

“That’s what she told me.”

“Matt, you’d believe anything.”

“What’s that supposed to mean?”

“You’re gullible. Dad would tell you something and you took it in.”

“Like what?”

“That time he came home and told us he’d got a promotion.”

“He got a new car.”

“And that he had to travel.”

“He was a salesman.”

“They should have told you.”

“Told me what?”

“About Eileen… or rather, Dad and Eileen.”

“Auntie Eileen?”

“Eileen Matthews, yes. Where do you think ‘Matt’ came from?”
