Just as the number 12 pulled in
“Ugly thing, innit,” a woman’s voice mumbled over his left shoulder.
Eddie was just about to agree when a man’s voice answered her. “Bet Prince Charles would have something to say about it.”
Eddie frowned but then his gaze followed the dog past a bland 1970s office block.
“Bus is late again,” the woman said, changing the subject.
Eddie nodded and looked at his watch. Expecting it to show a few minutes after eight, yet it was three hours earlier. He instinctively held his wrist to his ear and heard the melodious ticking that had reminded him of his girlfriend’s heartbeat the first time he’d stayed over.
As the bus approached, he felt a hand on his shoulder so turned round and saw the woman stretch out her arms. With palms flat, she thrust her hands against his chest making contact just as the number 12 pulled in.
