A different ending

156 books - 40338You know when you come home from work that Tom will still be up there, in the windowless attic, tapping away at the keyboard, writing his ‘masterpiece’. He’s there when you leave, when you ring, when you return.

He’ll come down when you call him for his dinner, tell you about his day, knowing he won’t wait for details of yours.

He wanted the house for that room, the twenty-feet-square that he paces into the early hours. The room you viewed once and were glad to leave as his.

Friday nights you go out with the girls and slam the front door extra loudly to make the point. You’ve suggested trips out together but he quotes deadlines and returns upstairs with his mug of tea and dessert.

The girls are primed together so they know the right answers should he suspect that this Friday would be any different.

Closing your coat, wrapping it around your new red dress, you step into the taxi and tell driver the name of the bar. You know that if Tom every found out, he’d write a different ending.
